You should be somewhere in the middle of Pride and Prejudice and madly in love with it. Well, as much in love as one could be with a book and not be creepy (umm. . .like Megan Sears and Twilight--beware of November 19th when this churlish idea and its glittering vampires hit the theaters. Stay away from lakes that night.) To my point, the question is: Who has more pride: Darcy or Elizabeth? Please provide at least one example for support. Make sure you check other people's comments to help fuel the debate. If you have read or watched ahead, you still may use examples from later in the story for support.

Darcy has more pride than Elizabeth because he is more rich. It comes with the territory, when you are rich, you have to have a strong sense of pride. And not only is he rich, but one of the richest, therefore he has pride coming out the seams. One example of this is when thhe Bingley sisters start to make fun of Elizabeth and Jane, Mr. Bingley and Darcy defend the Bennets, but Darcy is the one who folds and begins to mock the Bennets for their poorness.

I agree with Tommy. Darcy is more proud because he is more rich then everyone and thinks that he knows everything. He thinks that because he is rich no one is at his level. And example is in the begining at the ball when he wouldn't dance with anyone. It wasn't because he couldn't dance, it was because none of the girls there were good enough for him.

I agree with Quinn, Darcy is a d bag and he was acting like it all through the first impressions of him, and i think that is very important.

Time to make this a debate.

I'm going against the flow to side with Elizabeth. Elizabeth is far more open and vocal about her pride, stubbornly defending it such as when she refused to marry Mr. Collins and when she totally burned Mr. Darcy at the ball (after he had called her "tolerable"; everyone should at least remember this since we went over it in class).

Mr. Darcy seems quite the opposite, being more silent. Certainly, he gives off an air of arrogance, but he's so much more passive.

So, I feel that Elizabeth gives a much stronger impression than Mr. Darcy.
(And I may return to reply again, depending on the other responses.)

  5. Ellizabeth has more pride because it takes her a dance, janes heart being broken, running into him by accident multiple times, meeting his aunt twice, once on a good note but having to play the piano, the other time she stormed into Elizabeths home to say Mr.Darcy was already engaged and that she wasnt good enuff for him, and him fixing all the problems he made. It took all that for her to kiss him to basicly say she loved him and that was the end of that.

  6. um excuse me, after I watch New Moon with Senora I will follow her home and torture you with Twilight quotes! haaa!!!! anyways... Darcy is dumb and he has pride cause he is rich and all, but Elizabeth has more! Because most women like her want Darcy cause money helllloo! but Elizabeth knows hes just a poo head acts kind of mean to him.. but in the end i know they fall madly in love forever and ever so what does it matter.. not as in love as edward and bella though..

  7. I think Darcy has more pride. He was too proud to dance with elizabeth at the beginning of the movie but towards the end he realized that he isnt better than her because of his money, and he gives up his pride and asks elizabeth to dance/marry him. Elizabeth had pride in herself because usually girls then just agreed and made the man feel good about themselves, but she was herself and didnt care what he thought.

  8. They both have the same levels of pride, but they act differently with that pride. Darcy has a lot of pride in his accomplishments and his intelligence. he clearly makes it known that he is the power in the room. But Elizabeth on the other hand has a lot of pride in who she is, and how she is. She has a lot of pride in her words and her opinions just like Darcy. But unlike Darcy, Elizabeth is able to swallow her pride and interact with people. Darcy doesn't know how to get his pride out of the way so he can learn to be an actual person for a change. So I don't think that one has more pride over the other, its just what they do with their pride that is different.

  9. I agree with the kid above me, i think they have equal levels of pride, but in their own way's. Darcy has alot of pride because he's one of the richest men, and he has so many things. He has the right to carry this pride, because it comes natural with everything he has worked for. i think elizabeth has pride by the things she says. She is able to stick up for herself and she know's what she wants in life. She isnt socially akward and weird, and if she doesnt like the way somethings going she is the first to say somthing. They both show their pride in diffrent ways.

    ReplyDelete
  10. they both seem to have an equal amount of pride.Darcy's just more hidden about his , and only expresses his self with the people he truly cares for. Elizabeth;s pride is very vocal and you can see everything in her expressions and words.I saw the movie and when Lady Catherine comes to her house to basically tell her you better not marry Darcy cause my daughter is and blah blah blah.Elizabeth fried her and she walked out saying how she never has been talked to that way.Elizabeth just knows who she is and she wont let anyone tell her differently.

Darcy is most definetely the most proud out of practically anyone in the book. He is beyond rich, and can afford anything his creepy heart desires. He has this thang for elizabeth, I mean gosh look at her its kiera knightley....COME ON! BABE ALERT!!! LOL. ok so where is he proud, lets take the ball for exaxmple. He thiks nothing of any of the girls, or atleast he won't admit it. He feels that he is above them, personally and socially. He is such a "A" word. He knows lizzy is H-O-T HOT. but will he admit it....HELL NO!

I think Elizabeth has more pride because she is more confident with herself and knows what she wants. Darcy has no social skills at all and makes every speaking situation awkward. Even though he is rich and has pride in that he is not confident with himself. My example is during the ball when he uses big words when talking to Elizabeth instead of talking in a flirtatious way.

I feel Elizabeth has more pride than Darcy. Using the support given by the majority of the Darcy folks, Elizabeth doesn't have that money catalyst to give her an excuse for her pride. Her family is middle class and she has the cahonas to stand up to this insanely rich snob of a guy and tell him off ever so politely. If that isn't pride then idk what is.

Lizzy is full of pride. She is the kind of girl that has no problem in telling you what she thinks. When she completly denied the "dull as a doornail" Mr. Collins's proposal it showed the reader how she wasn't going to just make do with Mr. Collin's because of his social class. She knows what she wants (love) and isn't gonna do without it.

I think they both, Darcy and Elizabeth, have equal amounts of pride. Darcy shows his pride in how much money he has and being snobby to everybody. Elizabeth shows her pride by not giving into Darcy just because he is rich and every other girl falls for him because of that. Actually I think Elizabeth has a little more pride. She stands up for what she believes in even if she is standing alone. When he mother wanted her to marry Mr. Collins, she refused to and stood up for herself because she did not love him. Darcy may have a lot of money, but his pride is shown in a negative way.

I would have to say that Darcy has more pride. Only because he is richer and he has to look a certain way to the public. And he acts snobby and like he doesn't care to save face in a way. So in his mind people should love to be in his present because of his social status when thats really not the case at all. So i would have to agree with the others Darcy's pride can only be taken in negative way.

I think that both Darcy and Elizabeth have the same amount of pride, it is just different types of pride. Darcy has pride because he sort of has to. Since he is rich, he has to act like he is above everyone else. Like at the dance when he shows up and refuses to dance with the lower class women. He continues to act like this until Elizabeth shows up and turns his world upside down. Elizabeth has a very vocal type of pride. She is not afraid to tell anyone how she truly feels. She fries Mr.Collins life when he asks her to marry him. She is very stubborn and independent.

  18. Ok John Walker we are supposed to write like 50 words. Not ten that agree with exatly what someone else says... im just messing. I think Darcy also has more pride, and not just because my African american Studies brothers say so. I think this beacuse he has so much to live up to. He has to be the high class person, and he never wants to be anything but that.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I believe that they both have pride problems but in different ways and not as much as everyone thinks. Elizabeth's pride seems like she trys to hide her true feelings yes she is a smart butt. When Darcy proposes to her and she turns him down and for no good reason and because of rumors and lies. Darcy has a little pride but not muc h and both elizabeth and darcy are misread on this. they do not have much pride they just try to hide therer feelings. Darcy does not think everyone shoud no all about him and everyone mistakes pride for him actually just being shy and scared. So now in the end i like dacry and elizabeth so happy they got together!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think that darcy has more pride than Elizabeth till he started liking her and Elizabeth just started to turn him down since she is one class lower than Darcy and his richness. So a greedy person does have a pride and be shy about meeting people like darcy meeting people and being shy about it

    ReplyDelete
  21. I do not think one is more or less proud than the other, because there are two many "Areas of pride". You can be proud because of your family, their accomplishments, or the estate, proud because you want to show you can get by on what you have and don't need to conform to society's expectations. (<-- Elizabeth.) Or you can be proud because of your wealth, your own accomplishments and stability, the fact that you know you have something that matters (<-- Mr. Darcy). When it comes to the both of them being directly compared to one another though, I'd argue that Darcy is proud in his, this is who I am, I won't lower my status or ask for thanks for helping your family and such, and Elizabeth is proud in her, she likes him, but turns him away and won't give him the time of day because she isn't the one to get all prissy for society like everyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I agree with John, Quinn and Tommy. Darcy is more of a proud person. With his rich background he appears, in the beginning, to have something stuck up his @** but over the course of the novel he loosens up a little. I don't know what all you people said but his social and economic status doesn't automatically a certain level of pride. Proudness comes from experience, its not hereditary. He has enough pride to stay at his level, instead of going down to Elizabeth's, and asks her to marry him.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I believe Elizabeth has more pride. I say this because she continuously talks bad about Darcy to her friends just to save face. Darcy on the other hand is trying to show her some kind of affection and its not his fault that he cant. He just doesnt know how to be social and he doesnt really know how to talk to her. So Darcy doesnt have as much pride as Elizabeth.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'll choose you... Elizabeth.
Yeah, so i would definitely say that Elizabeth could have more than enough pride for herself. Sure she isn't rich, and yes she gets herself ridiculed for her being about as poor as this book. My example i pull this from is due to Mr. Collins. The proposal to be a definitive point.
Even though she should marry him to keep the household, she ends up putting the wee 'lil Collins down. Well any further down he can actually go... Anyhow... When she puts him down she thinks of herself and how much pride she would lose to marry an undesirable man, marrying her just for the properties, which would end up like her parents, bickering daily and regretting marrying each other. So yes, i do believe Elizabeth has some more pride than Darcy.

I think that Elizabeth has more pride. Even though Mr. Darcy is rich and pride comes with the territory of that, Elizabeth speaks her mind and doesn't let people get away with offending her. Most women would be happy when they get a proposal and agree to marry the person that proposes without a second thought. But in Elizabeth's case she constantly refuses and even if Mr. Collins is the only person that will propose to her, she is happier to be single all of her life than to marry someone that she knows she is not going to be happy with.

I believe that Mr. Darcy has the most pride of the two. In the beginning at the very first ball it tells it all. Darcy has money and for that he thinks he's better than everyone else. I think Elizabeth is prud but i think its more of a -My names Elizabeth and im gonna tell you how it is- type thing.

Wow Princess Johnny, what up with the lack of wordage? Oh and i saw New Moon Too!! Freakin Amazing Mr. P (Mr. Urine). Moving on, I am going to have to disagree with Tohmas Volpe up there, Darcy may be Rich, but i don't think he takes that much pride in it. I am going to have to go with Elizabeth on this one, I mean she is an indepndent woman, who takes pride in her outgoing manners. The way she was able to step out of the refined ways of a classic woman of the 1800's. She takes pride enough to make the fisrt move. She is flippin awesome. So i choose Elizabeth.

I shall agree with people and say Dacry has more pride. It does have to do with the fact he is richer but he goes along with the social norm he is too proud to unquie. Also at the ball he says Elizabeth is agreeable Even though he is awkard he still believes he is better than everysingle perosn EVER (kinda like Hitler but not as mean).

Elizabeth has way more pride then Darcy. Darcy starts out by saying that Elizabeth and all of the Bennet sisters are unfit to wed because of their financial status and goes on to insult Elizabeth. Even after all that Darcy can quickly overcome his narrow minded attitude about the Bennets and fall in Love with one of them before Elizabeth overcomes any of her pride. Darcy wins. Elizabeth can suck one. and i agree with Ken

I think that Elizabeth has more pride. She totally rejected him when he asked me to marry him. She is much more open about this and she could care less what people think as long as she has pride. That’s one thing I believe is important to her. It is how she gets through life and how she deals with all the stupid and rude people she meets.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I say both characters has pride in their own way. Mr. Darcy is wealthy, the riches of his family, but is shy to speak his mind. Elizebeth speeks her mind and dosen't care what others think about her.

I believe Elizabeth has more pride than Darcy. She is more outspoken and allows her voice to be heard, unlike the awkward and quiet Darcy who is insecure about himself, and also has to pretend he is better than everyone because he is richer. Elizabeth on the other hand has enough self-respect and self-worth that she denied Collins marriage proposal because she knew she wouldn't be happy with him.

I think elizabeth has more pride than Darcy. If you have pride in yourself, you wouldn't be afraid to talk to a girl, like Darcy. So it doesn't seem like he has much. But Elizabeth talks to everyone and says just about everything. so she has a lot of pride. I think??

First off, Markee should learn how to type, or at least some grammar, so he can write an effective blog for ENGLISH class (;. With that out of the way, I think Elizabeth has more pride than Darcy. This is because personally, I have enough pride to go up to a girl and carry on a conversation with her if I'm interested. At the ball, however, Darcy barely had the package to ask her to dance (and even that was in an awkward manner). So therefore, Darcy's pride level is obviously pretty low.

  37. i think they have equal pride. but darcy is just more noticable with his pride because it is visible pride of his class. he is aware he is wealth and lets you know it it. also elizabeth has equal pride because she refuses to dance with him after he fried her which in turn fries him back showing she has pride aswell

    ReplyDelete

elizabeth has more pride. i know darcy has money, but he doesnt take all that much pride in it. he seems really stuck up tho. elizabeth on the other hand, has the cojones to tell Mr. Rich D. Bag that she wont dance with him. in her society, that was unheard of. way to go (ballsy/ballsey) elizabeth. (do you think ballsy should be spelled with just the Y, or with an EY??)

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think that both have the same amount of pride but both for different things like I think that mr.Darcy has alot of pride when it comes to things that he has done like with his riches and things that that he done in his life and also the I think that his pride cn also stop from talking with ertain people to.
And when it comes to Elizabeth I think that all her pride comes in with her actions just like Darcy I think that her pride would make her do and stay things or not do and say things because of her prideand she feels strong about that

    ReplyDelete
  40. i think Darcy because he was rich. he knew he had more money than everyone else. also because not only was he the richest he knew what he wanted and no one there was obviously not good enough for him. also he didnt give in easily he was gonna get the best not just settle.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I believe that Elizabeth has more pride. During that tome [eriod women were not expected to have an opinion, and if they did they were not expected to voice it. Elizabeth did not follow that rule at all. She was the kinda of lady that sopke her mind and unlike most women she wouldn't take anything less than what she thought she deserved. This is why i think that Elizabeth has more pride.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think that elizabeth has more pride, becuase she is able to stand up for herself no matter the situation. She doesnt care what other people think and will do whatever she needs to do to make herslef happy. During the dance scene the conversations she had with darcy were very intellectual yet she didnt bend the ways she thinks about things

    ReplyDelete
  43. Darcy has more pride, but Elizabeth has more fire. Darcy is very arrogant but Elizabeth just has this way of always being so shnarky (yeah its a word, google it.) So anyways, Darcy is more proud but i like Elizabeth way better. She is a strong, independant woman. Plus arroagnce and pride comes with money.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Darcy does not have nearly as much pride as Elizabeth. It seems like Darcy's pride was more him being very shy and reserved. Elizabeth, however, knew exactly what she wanted and spoke to whomever in whatever way they deserved to be spoken to. She was a woman who was different and was her own person while everyone else was following the crowd and doing what was expected of them. She didn't care that she wasn't the most wealthy or the most beautiful, but she knew she had to have pride in herself as an intelligent woman.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think Darcy has more pride. This is because he is very rich and usually really rich people are very prideful. He is also like one of the richest people so he is extra prideful. One example of this is when Darcy makes fun of the Bennett’s for being poor.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think that Elizabeth has more pride because when people ask her out from a different social status and she turns them down because she knowws that he really is not in it for the love. But when Darcy asks her she knows that he has some feelings for him and has the pride to say yes before she can think any more about it. Her pride speaks for her mind.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Darcy is just ridicoulously rich and can't help but have pride. Even if he lacks social skills, he makes up for it by parting the room when he walks into the entrance. Elizabeth, on the other hand, doesn't have much to work with. She has more pride because she has to work for what she earns, and has to make it so that she gets what she wants instead of just laying back and letting money do what needs to be done. Elizabeth does things that will make her happy like refusing to marry. It just shows that she is willing to do a lot to keep herself happy, and to keep the pride of her life.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Thomas Bernier

Obviously Darcy and Elizabeth are both prideful characters(hence the title, Pride and Prejudice), but the one with more pride is Elizabeth. Darcy first shows his pride of himself and his status when he refuses to dance with her. But after she impresses him with her insult, and her fiery personality, he puts his pride behind him and starts pursuing her, albeit in an awkward and backfiring way. Elizabeth on the other hand, is so proud she cannot accept her feelings for Darcy because she thinks she is better than a stuck-up snob like Darcy. She still hasn't forgiven him since that first night, another testament to her pride. It's not even always with Darcy that she shows her immense pride. Elizabeth also shows it when she turns down Collins' proposal, believing that he could never make her happy. While that was true, it still shows that she respects herself more than most women in her time period.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Jessica McCarter

Elizabeth has more pride than Mr. Darcy. It is clearly shown when Darcy announcing his love to her and her pride blinded her from her love toward him. She was very rude when he told her that he was in love with her and asked for her hand. He even gave reasons for why he did the terrible things that made them not so terrible.

  50. Darcy has way more pride, and is ten times more richer. He talked s about her before he even knew her, and he didn't want mr. bingley to marry any of the Bennet sisters because they where above them. darcy can suck it. i agree witrh jordan and ken.

  51. Well I think Elizabeth has more pride because she will not give into Darcy or fall all over him because he is rich. Even though she has a lot of pride in this area, it's not necessarily a bad thing.Darcy has some pride by not talking to people he doesn't nkow but it's also because he was never taught how.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I think elizabeth has more pride because she is not interested in money for a relationship. She wants passion not love with a cusion of money. But Darcy has some pride in not talking to people who are just flirting with him for just money he wants someone who is actually intellegent and not greedy for money.

elizabeth is just open minded and doesnt mind expressing herself. like with lady catherine..

  56. I believe that Darcy is the one with the most pride. If you pay attention only to the fact that Darcy naturally appears to be stuck up and superior, then you’re only getting half of the picture. One attribute you must take into account is how undeniably timid and awkward he is. The fact he can walk around standing tall and confident is a big social step for him. The reason he can do this is because he knows without a doubt that no one can bring him and his intricate personality down to their level. He represents his wealth with courtesy and allows only specific people knowledge of who he really is as a person. It’s as if he feels the access to his feelings is a privilege that only a few are worthy enough to experience.

Oh… and also the book is called PRIDE AND PREJUDICE!!! Elizabeth obviously is the one who was prejudice towards Darcy, so that leaves the pride to the only other protagonist… Darcy you bimbos!!!!!

Elizabeth still stuck her nose up at him even after breaking every social wall he had just so he could pop the question. Although I kinda think that what they hae is more of a stuborn thing rather then a pride thing. Elizabeh has also proven to have pride ot side of he Darcy siuation. Her pride has caused her o urn down wealth men because she does not love or like them.
